All water on Earth is at least as old as the planet itself and is constantly recycled. The water molecules in your glass may have been part of the first oceans, drunk and excreted by dinosaurs, or passed through plants long before humans evolved. The process of water recycling is simple: evaporation and transpiration turn liquid water into vapor; condensation of that vapor creates clouds; and precipitation returns fresh water to the ground. Most of that fresh water eventually returns to the oceans, continuing the cycle.

It can be said that all water is in motion. Even water that appears still, like that in lakes and glaciers, eventually evaporates (or sublimates), and moves as vapor through air currents. Surface and underground water generally flow toward the sea under the influence of gravity. This movement of water, which I’ll broadly call currents, and the environments where it is visible, is the focus of this book.

I did not photograph freshwater environments with the intent of creating a book. Instead, I felt drawn to them and photographed for the sheer pleasure of being there. The places I visited were not only beautiful but felt physically and mentally restorative. Being there often cleared my mind of the typical mental noise of daily life, and I left feeling more relaxed, focused, and creative. The experience was self-reinforcing and something I wanted to share with others.

Research shows that most people gain similar mental benefits from being in nature. There are also other health benefits, such as reduced stress, lower blood pressure, a slower heart rate, and decreased cortisol levels. Interestingly, similar effects happen in people who simply view images of natural environments.

This means I gain two benefits from creating this book: first, from my time spent photographing in a natural environment, and second, from repeatedly reviewing the images for inclusion. I hope you find some benefit in viewing the photographs and are motivated to visit similar locations yourself.
